5 Basic Improv Rules

5 Basic Improv Rules

Here is another set of Rules that makes rounds on the internet (see our comment about Rules of Improv though). We are not aware of the source of this set of rules – if you do by all means let us know.

1) Don’t Deny

Denial is the number one reason most scenes go bad. Any time you refuse an Offer made by your partner your scene will almost instantly come to a grinding halt. Example: Player A) “Hi, my name is Jim. Welcome to my store.” Player B) “This isn’t a store, it’s an airplane. and you’re not Jim, you’re an antelope.”

2) Don’t ask open ended Questions

Open ended questions (like “Who are you?”) are scene killers because they force your partner to stop whatever they are doing and come up with an answer. When you ask your partner and open ended question, you put the burden of coming up with something “interesting” on your partner – so you are no longer doing a scene together but forcing one person has to do more work than you are willing to do.

3) You don’t have to be funny.

The hidden riddle of improv is that the harder you try not to be funny the more funny your scene is going to be. Why? Because it’s the very best kind of improv scene you can do is an “interesting” scene, not necessarily a “funny” one. When you do an interesting scene, a very surprising thing happens… the funny comes out all by it’s self.

The best ways to go are to stick to your character, stick to the story that is being told, and to stay within the reality of the scene you are playing.

4) You can look good if you make your partner look good.

When you are in a scene, the better you make your partner look the better the scene is going to be and, as a direct result, the better you are going to look. All too often, I’ve seen players enter a scene and I can just tell they have some really great idea about the character they are going to play or an idea they want to do. This is wonderful, but guess what? Your partner probably has absolutely no idea what’s cooking in your evil little mind, and so has no idea how to react. And no matter how brilliant your idea might be, it’s practically worthless if the scene as a whole goes bad.

5) Tell a story.

Storytelling is probably the easiest rule to remember but the hardest one to do. The real magic of improv is when we see the players take totally random suggestions (like a plumber and a cab driver selling shoes in a leper colony ) and somehow “make it work”. If all these unrelated elements are going to come together then it’s going to happen in the course of an interesting tale. So that’s just what the players are going to try and do, tell us all a story.

$77,000 Kalista Ultimate SE CD transporter

April 27th, 2011 David No comments

CD transport 1 $77,000 Kalista Ultimate SE CD transporter Metronome Technlogie of France has unveiled an exclusive new CD transport named Kalista Ultimate SE for $77,000. to start with, a CD transport is a CD player with a digital output. A CD transporter acts as a transport mechanism to send the digital information off a CD to an external digital to analog converter bypassing it’s own digital to analog converter section – that is what the device does. The hitch here is that to put this device into full use, you will also need to connect a digital to analog converter.
So what really is the point for such a high cost? It isn’t even gold plated or diamond studded. It is just really heavy – 181 pounds – that’s it.

ST. REGIS Gets iPad E-Butler

April 26th, 2011 David No comments

St Regis New York E butler app ST. REGIS Gets iPad E Butler P G Wodehouse would have never imagined that his prodigal butler would take technology too seriously. the Apple Store has been keeping the ball running when it comes to unveiling new and unique applications and the latest one to join the bandwagon is the St Regis New York. The posh hotel is making life very simple for its guests by introducing the E-Butler application allowing them to chat with their butlers in real time using their iPhone or iPad. The hotel has gone an extra mile in sponging information of New York’s most known celebrities and personalities, easing their stay, activities and preferences – ‘with the touch of a button’.
The application will also give a calendar of events happening around the city so that guests will be able to book an exciting stay during their visit. They can chat up with their butlers and tell them how precise their needs are. This application is extremely handy in circumstances where, owing to the market situations and competitiveness, one is married to one’s communication gadgets. Making an entire trip on the go is not something that is new but having direct access to the person in charge of your matters during a short halt or mini-trip is quite flattering. Wonder if these ‘butlers’ on the other side of the cable are given meditation classes prior to their appointment to keep their cool – the customer is always right after all.

Bing Destinations serves up quick travel info for 3,000 cities worldwide

by Lee Mathews on December 21, 2010 at 09:30 AM

bing dest Bing Travel Planner
When you use your favorite search engine to pull up information about a particular city, Microsoft figures there’s a decent chance you’re thinking about traveling there. To help you research and make a decision faster, Bing has added Destination pages, which provide a one-page snapshot of travel information.

3,000 cities worldwide are supported at the moment, though you’ll need to make sure your region is set to United States. To change, simple visit Bing and click on your current country in the top-right corner. The first thing you’ll see is a snippet about the city from Frommers, publishers of the popular travel guidebooks. Below that is a three-by-three grid with short range weather, upcoming events, local attractions and news, and relevant photos and videos. The sidebar also displays links to local landmarks like sports arenas, museums, and parks.

Check out the demonstration video to see Destinations in action, or go give it a shot yourself at Bing.com.

Musing Over Manhattan: A Minimalist Workspace with a View

April 22nd, 2011 David No comments

500x 2010 12 21 000633 Musing Over Manhattan: A Minimalist Workspace with a ViewIf high ceilings make you more creative, feeling like you’re pondering your problems on top of the world has to offer a cognitive boost of some sort. Today’s workspace features an uncluttered desk that doesn’t block the sweeping view.

Lifehacker reader Matt Bango has a great reason to keep his desk tidy and his office spartan; anything cluttering up his desk blocks his sweeping view of the Manhattan skyline. Although not all of us work overlooking Manhattan we can all take a cue from Matt and arrange our work space around whatever view we can scrape together—a window, a soothing poster on the wall, or a stand of hearty indoor plants.
