Jean Grey Returning to Marvel Comics

August 27th, 2012 David No comments

by Spencer Perry
Looks like the long rumored idea that Jean Grey would make a comeback after this summer’s “Avengers vs. X-Men” is potentially true. According to EW, they will reveal more in their upcomingComic-Con issue, but for now there’s just a look at this small piece of art by Joe Quesada.

Though EW doesn’t want to offer all the details just yet, they do offer some tidbits that will hold you over for a while.

Yes, this is Jean Grey — as in, the Jean Grey who’s been absent from Marvel comics ever since dying for a second time back in the mid-00s. And yes, she is modeling her vintage blue-and-yellow X-Men outfit from her Marvel Girl days. Does this mean that the fan-favorite character is finally returning? We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel universe will not be imaginary.

Though what capacity the character is returning to the comics in is still unseen, we now know she’ll be back.

PictoPlay 1 Why Waste Time Drawing Something When You Can Use Photos With PictoPlay Instead

mza 6834758129736397239.100x100 75 Why Waste Time Drawing Something When You Can Use Photos With PictoPlay InsteadPictoPlay (Free) by IRL, INC is a social networking game that is all about photographs. Just like the popular iOS game draw Something, this app lets you play against friends in a word-to-image game, only with PictoPlay, you get to take photos instead of draw pictures.

photo 11 200x300 Why Waste Time Drawing Something When You Can Use Photos With PictoPlay InsteadYou can take a picture from within the app, or select an image from your camera roll. For one of my turns, I found an image from the Internet that I had taken a screen shot of. Your options are unlimited. However, if you enjoy taking photos, I don’t suggest simply using preexisting images from the Internet. It defeats the purpose of the game, which is to take cool pictures.

Once you’ve added your picture, you can add a comment. If you take a photo that needs explanation, this is a good way to provide your friend with a bit of background information on why you took the picture, or what they are seeing. Players can also comment on pictures from their opponent.

With every turn, players earn credits that can be used to customize their experience. For example, you can pay two credits to get a new set of words to choose from, or pay four credits to enter your own custom word.

Players can also send images to Instagram and Facebook. You don’t have to stick to your own images, either. You can add your opponents’ photo with just a tap of a button.

I was only able to play this game for about a day with a friend, but it seems to be a pretty fun way to share photos with others. The game lacks variety for how to connect with friends. The only way you can play with people is if they are your Facebook friend. I know a couple of people that don’t use Facebook, but would probably love to play this game. I’d like to see the ability to connect with friends through Game Center.

Even though the friend discovery feature is somewhat lacking, this is a great game. It may not gain the overwhelming popularity that Draw Something did, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t gain some notoriety over the next few weeks. download it, get your friends to download it, and start taking pictures of everything around you. This is a fun way to stay connected with others throughout the day in a more visual way.

Limited edition carbon fibre furniture from British Designer Jules Sturgess

August 8th, 2012 David No comments

from Born Rich by Karanvir Singh
Karanvir Singh:Stretching the potential of the material and manufacturing processes to the extreme, a young British designer greatly influenced by automotive Design from an early age, Jules Sturgess, has launched a range of luxury carbon fiber composite furniture. The designer has pushed the already extraordinary properties of carbon fiber, resulting in bespoke furniture pieces that seemingly defies the laws of physics and has been influenced by the structural design and advanced materials and manufacturing processes used in the world of racing and supercars. Interestingly, the limited edition, handcrafted, carbon furniture items, including the Marea, Amaca, Monolito Megalito, to name a few, has been created through the combination of ultramodern design practices and materials, with traditional handcrafting skills. However, it’s not new to see the furniture crafted out of carbon fiber, as we have earlier seen the contemporary carbon furniture by Mast 3.0 and the carbon fiber chair by Timothy Schreiber.

Available at a price of $23,380, Marea is the first furniture piece in the carbon-fiber collection, which has been inspired by the idea of the human form in suspension and the single motion of a brush stroke.

To best describe, it’s a sleek chaise lounge that strikes a perfect blend of fluid beauty and innate strength. Though, it’s just 4mm thick at its edge, but it possesses the capability to sustain great weight.

Built up of two separate carbon sections that are anchored together at the critical strain point by a central titanium hub, Marea, weighing 17kg, is almost invisible when viewed from the side, taking the traditional form of three chaise lounge to a cantilevered extreme, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view.

And, for those who wish to personalize further, designer Jules Sturgess also offers full bespoke finishing. But, this chaise lounge is only limited to 50 individual pieces, and each piece is carefully crafted by hand from 22 layers of three different weaves of carbon fiber layered at 45 degree angles to build in both longitudinal and transverse flexural strength.

Notably, the furniture piece is only made to order, and no two will ever be the same.

Another piece of furniture is Monolito and Megalito; dramatically cantilevered and spanning three and a half meters, it also appear to defy the laws of physics, and is just 5 mm thick at their tips. With production limited to just 25 individually numbered examples, a full customization service is also provided.

Inspired by the hammock, another furniture piece, the Amaca chaise is inherently very comfortable as it only has one hard point (under the legs) the rest of the body is suspended in a reclined sling that conforms perfectly to the body’s shape.

The Act Is An Incredibly Humorous Original Comedy Filled With Lovable Characters

August 1st, 2012 David No comments

from app Advice by Daniel Douvris

image 110 642x428 The Act Is An Incredibly Humorous Original Comedy Filled With Lovable Characters

mza 7744009351931934541.100x100 75 The Act Is An Incredibly Humorous Original Comedy Filled With Lovable Charactersthe Act ($2.99) by Chillingo Ltd is an original Comedy that will have you hooked from the opening scene.

Step into the shoes of Edgar, a window washer who falls into a tricky situation when his brother falls asleep on the hospital bed of a patient waiting to undergo a brain transplant. As you progress through the interactive scenes, you need to save your brother, save your job, and try to woo the woman of your dreams.

image 310 300x200 The Act Is An Incredibly Humorous Original Comedy Filled With Lovable CharactersThe Act features completely hand-drawn artwork. Although it isn’t Retina resolution, it truly is beautiful and it is coupled with some really funny (and smooth) animations. The artwork and animations combined give the characters a ton of personality, allowing you to be pulled into the story.

As a story, The Act is incredible. The plot is engaging, and it keeps you on your toes as you don’t really know what is going to happen until it does.

As a game, The Act is fun, yet not quite what you would expect. Similar to games like Dragon’s Lair, at certain points in the game you are given control of Edgar. Your job is to control Edgar’s actions and facial expressions by sliding your finger left and right on the screen.

Sliding your finger to the edges of the screen will result in extreme actions, like slapping people in the back or staring awkwardly at people and showing off dance moves. These actions will make Edgar stick out like a sore thumb (which could be good depending on the moment). Keeping your finger close to the center will ensure that Edgar performs less noticeable actions, like smiling or scowling.

image 49 300x200 The Act Is An Incredibly Humorous Original Comedy Filled With Lovable CharactersThe controls may be simple, but the real trick is figuring out when to make Edgar act, and how he should act. To give away a small portion of the story (no spoiler here), Edgar sneaks into a hospital by dressing up like a doctor. From this point forward, you have to act like a doctor and try to fit in. As Chillingo says, “Keep up the act!”

Considering the story, the characters, the artwork, and the interactive nature of the game, The Act is fun and engaging. While it isn’t a traditional game in any sense, it is still enjoyable to say the least. The Act provides a story and cast that you can fall in love with, and while the gameplay elements are minimal, they were implemented well, and that is what makes a game fun.

The Act beckons with its artwork and story, its brotherly duo (very similar to the two main characters in “Of Mice and Men”), and its simple gameplay. Some players will inevitably complain that it is not a “game,” but such gamers will not be appreciating what The Act does offer. Take The Act for what it’s worth, and you will have a product that is worth your time and money. I’m keeping up the act, can you?

The Taj Mahal table by Studio Job is the most expensive memento at $45,450

July 31st, 2012 David No comments

from Born Rich by Nandini Maheshwari
Nandini Maheshwari:Taj Mahal, the widely recognized “Seven wonders of the world” in Agra, India is notable for its architectural beauty. Commissioned by Shah Jahan, one of the distinguished Mughal emperors in the memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the monument has always inspired the Design and architectural world. But the Belgian design firm studio Job has taken its inspiration to another level with the classic Taj Mahal table that it has unveiled at the Art Basel Miami 2012. The upside down TajMahal table is an exemplary work of art with innovation and tradition going hand in hand. The iconic bronze Taj Mahal Table boasts flashy gilt domes and is reportedly based on the same architectural principles except few changes in the design to make it upside down. Design-wise, it’s made of bronze unlike the white marble in Taj Mahal. Available in a limited edition of eight, this table is priced at €36,000 ($45,455).

The design house is known for its collector’s furniture cast in bronze. Back in 2007, the design studio has earned accolades for its limited edition suite of five pieces unveiled at Art Basel Miami, which got sold off to a private collector called Robber Baron for a whopping $700,000 within the first hour of the show.

The other contemporary designs by Studio Job includes a floor-standing bronze crane lamp, which reminds us of Swedish designer, Charlie Davidson’s iconic Crane Lamp Fixtures from the Milan fair 2012.

This little box turns your smartphone into a scanner

Goodbye, massive document scanners.

(Credit: Limemouse)Scanbox, created by Australian design company Limemouse, works as a miniature studio in a box perfect for scanning documents (up to A4 size), receipts, 3D objects, or even a page from a book.

At first glance, the $15 Scanbox may appear like some sort of strange geometric shape, but the peculiar design optimizes lighting conditions for the perfect shot. It only takes a few moments to set up the device, as the user simply aligns a few high-strength magnets built into the box.

A stencil of a smartphone with a square hole sits on top so that the user knows exactly where to place the camera lens every time. When the photo shoot ends, the Scanbox folds back up into a flat shape for easy transportation.

If you seek to shed a little more light on the situation, the $25 Scanbox Plus includes a set of LED lights built into the box to ensure perfect lighting, regardless of the situation.

Stand Up Table

July 17th, 2012 David No comments
Trends in work, leisure and technology have conspired to turn us all into sitters. We sit at work. We sit at school. We sit while at Home. And we sit in the car while conveying our expanding bodies from one sitting location to another.

All this sitting is devastating our health, creating disease and shortening lives. Sitting is the new smoking.

There’s a persistent myth about ergonomics, which is that sitting pain and injury comes from bad posture. You’ve seen the workplace safety diagrams. The screen should be at eye level. Forearms and wrists should be horizontal. Feet should be elevated. Back should be straight.

The truth is that there is no correct sitting position. Sitting injuries are mostly “repetitive stress injuries” or caused by the atrophy of muscles needed to support the skeleton. Always sitting in the so-called “correct” posture guarantees injury, because you’re always sitting in the same position, and therefore not moving.

That’s why a standing desk is so good for you. Our bodies are designed to stand for long periods of time. And we automatically shift our weight and move around while standing. Standing prevents both the repetitive stress and muscle atrophy that caused by sitting.

Our own homes are part of the problem. They’re often designed around the assumption that we want to sit all the time. Comfy couches. Padded bar stools. Lounge and lawn chairs in the backyard. Porch swings. Home office and desk chairs. Vanity stools in the bedroom. You’d think our homes were furnished by a bunch of rear ends.

Conventional interior decorating makes sitting almost a necessity. If we want to eat, watch TV, work or do any number of other activities in the home, sitting down is the only reasonable way to do it.

furniture is part of the problem. But furniture can also be the solution.

As computers and the Internet become more important, people are spending more time online and less time doing other things. By harnessing this one thing and transforming it into a standing activity, instead of a sitting one, you can reverse the trend of sitting too much.

Focal Locus chair and Desk – $1,450.00 »
Almost-Standing Desks

If standing for hours on end sounds like a pain in the … well, in the feet, then consider a compromise. Some desks are designed to put more weight onto your feet — but not all of it.

For example, the Focal Locus chair and desk setup puts you in a position that’s more standing than sitting, with a forward-leaning chair. You still get many of the benefits of a standing desk without having to stand all day.

You can also opt for a real standing desk, but add a Wilkhahn chair called the Stitz. The chair provides support, but it’s deliberately unstable, forcing you to move and flex during your workday.
